Inflammation is at the root cause of the most chronic health conditions and diseases. Inflammation is the body’s defense mechanism to protect us from infections, viruses, injuries, and toxins. There are two major types of inflammation: acute and chronic. Acute inflammation helps us to repair tissue damage when we have an injury or illness and helps us recover from it. The problem is chronic inflammation, which is the result of an excessive stress load on the body, including physical, emotional, and chemical stress. As a result, our immune system becomes overwhelmed and increases the inflammatory response which can eventually lead to major health issues and diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, numerous autoimmune conditions, cancer, etc.
Inflammation may develop because of a variety of lifestyle and environmental factors. Here are the top root causes.
1. Inflammatory food. Highly processed food, refined carbs and sugars, highly processed vegetable and trans oils as well as artificial sweeteners, additives and preservatives cause blood sugar imbalances, hormonal dysfunction and inflammation. Avoiding these foods as much as possible will help to keep inflammation under control.
2. Sedentary lifestyle. Moving your body regularly can help to reduce inflammation and improve your symptoms. Exercise at least 3-5 days a week for 20 to 30 minutes each time doing whatever you enjoy the most: running, walking, swimming, yoga, Pilates, high intensity interval training, etc.
3. Chronic stress, including physical, psychological, and emotional stress, is one of the top contributing factors to chronic inflammation and chronic health problems. Practicing stress-reduction techniques, yoga, meditation, nature bathing will have positive effect on the stress level and decrease inflammation in the body.
4. Sleep deprivation also is a major stressor to the body. 7–9-hour sleep is essential for the body to rest and keep inflammation at bay. Following a regular sleep schedule and bed-time routine that supports your body’s circadian rhythms, sleeping in dark and cool room, reducing stress level will promote deep and restorative sleep.
5. Toxic environment. Living in a moldy house, consuming contaminated water and food, being exposed to lead, cadmium, mercury, pesticides, herbicides, plastic, EMF or being in a toxic relationship, all of these create an enormous load on the body and skyrocket the inflammation. Try to remove yourself from the toxic environment completely or reduce exposure.
6. Hidden viruses or infections. Chronic infections, including gut infection, Epstein-Barr and herpes virus infections, Lyme disease, Candida overgrowth, other fungal infections, and parasitic infections can all compromise your immune system and immune response, as a result increase chronic inflammation.
